Details about this class

We are happy to be able to offer this "online, no scheduled meetings" chemistry course, meaning that all course components (lectures, assignments, quizzes, final exam) are online through D2L, and most of the labs done using a lab kit and a separate web site. You will be able to move through the course on your own schedule as long as you complete the work by the due date each week. It's a complex course, so organizational skills, close reading and attention to detail are essential!

This 5-credit course includes both lecture and lab, so it’s like two courses in one. It requires 15-20 hours each week since it is equivalent to an on-campus chemistry course. And I’m here to help every step of the way!

You’ll do the labs at home with a purchased lab kit. The lab reports will be completed online on the lab kit web site (Science Interactive, SI); a link to that site will be found in the D2L course. It’s expensive ($230+), but it’s the only way we can offer a valid, accredited chemistry course online – and it’s pretty fun! You will post 3 selfies doing the experiment each week. I’ll send a class email out to registered students the week before the class opens with all the ordering information as well as the course syllabus.

There are several options for purchasing the lab kit: Buying the Lab Kit Voucher from the PCC Bookstore or directly which allows you to use your financial aid or from the vendor, Science Interactive. Price is ~$230. See the Course Information module in D2L for details. Note: if you have financial aid, you will have $550 to spend at the PCC bookstore the first week before your full disbursement. You can use this to purchase your lab kit the first week of class.

Technology

A free online text and free online homework are embedded in the D2L course.

You will be using D2L Brightspace, the imbedded WeBWorK online homework system and an outside Science Interactive (SI) web site for the lab kit experiments. In addition, you'll need:

  • scientific calculator that can do exponents
  • an app that can take pictures and convert them to pdf files (AdobeScan is recommended; a scanner also works).
  • access to and proficiency with Google
  • a word processing program. Students have access to the student version of Office 365.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
