Eligibility:
All PCC students are welcome to take this class, regardless of eligibility to become a Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM). Students do not need to identify as a person in recovery from a substance use disorder in order to take this class.
However, only those who identify as being in recovery from a substance addiction for a minimum of two years may later apply to become certified as a substance addiction recovery mentor In order to later use the certificate earned through this class to apply to become an OHA THW Peer Support Specialist- Adult Addictions PSS-AD and to apply to become a Certified Recovery Mentor CRM through MHACBO in Oregon, student applicants must be able to identify as a peer in addiction recovery from a substance use disorder for a minimum of 2 years. In regards to these certifications, "peer" is a person with similar lived experience in addiction recovery from a substance use disorder.
AD 107 Course Description:
3 credits. Addiction Recovery Mentor course presents an overview of Addiction Recovery Mentor skills, resources and evidence-based practices that have been demonstrated to contribute to successful peer mentor programs. Audit available.
This course curriculum is Oregon Health Authority OHA-approved and MHACBO-approved for satisfaction of the educational requirement of an application for adult addiction peer recovery mentor certifications. This course curriculum is approved by the Oregon Health Authority Office of Traditional Health Workers, by MHACBO, and has been continually updated and approved since 2013.
AD 107 is a three-credit 30-hour course. With the additional 10 hours earned by completing your work with our required readings, homework Assignments, term Assignement project, and Online Discussions board, you will earn the 40 education hours required to apply for Certification by the State of Oregon and / or by MHACBO. This means there is a significant amount of weekly homework and a term project.
After the completion of this course, the instructor will distribute a Completion Certificate indicating completion of required work totaling the required 40 educational hours only to each student who has completed ALL required work and who self-identify as one in substance use recovery. This class's "Proof of Course Completion" Document meets the 40 hour educational requirement to then apply for substance addiction recovery mentor certification as PSS-AD and CRM.
Each student who has completed all required work and yet does NOT self-identify as one who is in substance use recovery will earn a "Proof of Course Participation" certificate and is NOT eligible for certification, in compliance with the OHA THW Oregon Health Authority Office of Traditional Health Workers and in compliance with the MHACBO Mental Health and Addictions Certification Board of Oregon requirements.
Following successful completion of this course, a "Proof of Course Completion" certificate and your self-determined status as a peer in chemical dependency recovery for a minimum of 2 years is necessary to apply to OHA to apply to MHACBO to become a OHA PSS-AD Peer Support - Adult Addictions and a MHACBO CRM certified recovery mentor. Processes are subject to change as changes develop in certification requirements.
Attendance Policy: Students can miss no more than the maximum time equivalent of 2 class periods if they wish to pass the course regardless of ANY circumstances. Attendance on D2L Zoom for our participatory class requires being on camera with working sound during all of class.
For fairness to all, instructor will not determine validity of ANY absences, and students should not ask instructor to do so. There are no excused or unexcused absences, only absences. Late arrivals, early departures, and absences will be computed into the final attendance total. A student must complete any missed exercises, assignments, videos, and classroom presentations by conferring with a student who was in attendance. This is especially important in this course as students are to earn the OHA-approved and MHACBO-approved 40 hour certificate. This policy will be upheld with no exceptions. There will be no negotiating about missing a third week, regardless of circumstances. This attendance policy is a PCC Department policy that is also compliant with State requirements for this specific OHA-approved and MHACBO-approved curriculum.
Final Exam is during our last class of the term. You are required to be present in person that day and participate fully in the required Final Exam, which includes participation in the required in-class role play, so there is no way to make-up for a missed final exam. The last class will include your final questions about the course and class reflection on readings. The last class is a required class that is reflected in your grade and accumulation of the required 40 hours for certification.
