Receiving certification

Initial certification

PCC offers coursework that meets the education required to become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor – Registrant (CADC-R). In total, 1,000 hours of supervised clinical experience are needed to be eligible to take the exam to become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor I (CADC I). Graduates of the certificate would register as a CADC-R and complete those 1,000 hours in their first CADC job. They would then take the CADC I exam.

Students who earn a degree, take one additional course not required for the certificate, and complete 4000 supervised hours can then take the CADC II exam.

The certification process is managed by the Mental Health and Addiction Counselor Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO). MHACBO provides the application, reviews the educational background, verifies the 1,000 hours of clinical experience, and facilitates testing for the CADC-1 certificate completion.
