Celebrating PCC Sylvania’s New All User Locker Room

All-user locker rooms make PCC more accessible by providing more privacy options for everyone. In this model, everyone benefits by having access to completely private showers and changing areas.

The new Health Technology Building (HT) locker rooms provide greater access to fitness programming at PCC for:?

  • People with children, who often have trouble finding a private place to dress or shower.?
  • Disabled people with personal attendants of a different gender, who may experience barriers in gendered locker rooms.?
  • Transgender and gender expansive people, who often face barriers accessing locker rooms and exercise facilities.
  • Anyone desiring privacy.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members who prefer gendered locker rooms still have the option to use designated, gendered rooms. Sports teams also have access to gendered locker rooms.

The HT new all-user locker rooms were designed with thoughtful intention. The design incorporates feedback from student and staff forums, as well as input from focus groups with Queer, Trans, and Gender Expansive (QTGE) students. The renovations are supported by PCC’s Queer and Women’s Resource Centers (QRCs/WRCs), Hope Services for survivors of sexual violence, PCC Accessibility Council, and Queer, Trans, and Gender Expansive (QTGE) Advocacy Group. The new space aligns with PCC’s Strategic Plan by enacting shared values of belonging and care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Why do HT locker rooms have an all-user design?

All-user locker rooms make PCC more accessible by providing more privacy options for everyone. PCC offers single occupant all-user locker rooms at three of our campuses to increase access to PCC gym facilities, athletics and PE classes. In this model, everyone benefits by having access to completely private showers and changing areas. The remodel also includes gendered locker rooms.

Question: Does this take away my privacy?

No; everyone gains more privacy in the new model. The new design significantly increases privacy for people of all genders by offering a few sizes of private spaces for dressing and showering, rather than an open, gendered space.?

Question: Does this make women more vulnerable??

No. There is no evidence that gender segregated facilities are safer for cisgender women than all-user facilities. The renovations are supported by PCC’s Women’s Resource Centers and Hope Services for survivors of sexual violence.

Question: Is this design appropriate for families with young children?

Yes. People with children often have trouble finding a private place to dress or shower. This design gives them privacy to change together without safety concerns or misunderstandings with others.

Question: How does this change align with PCC’s values?

The new space aligns with PCC’s Strategic Plan by enacting shared values of belonging and care. The design incorporates many rounds of feedback from a wide range of PCC students and staff.
