Homework

All homework will be found in the textbook, Thomas Judson’s The Ordinary Differential Equations Project. Select prompts for each section of homework are listed below. This text is available at no cost as an OER.

The homework prompts listed are a starting point to practice the material we learned in class (or from the videos). Some people may feel they need more practice after working through these prompts, and that is great to have that self-awareness! In this case, try some of the even prompts between the assigned odd ones.

Chapter 1
  • Section 1.1: 3, 5, 6, 7, 11, 17, 19, 28
  • Section 1.2: 5, 6, 8, 15, 16, 24, 25
  • Section 1.3: 2, 6 (use a computer plotter for 2 and 6 — do not plot them by hand), 9, 10, 11 (for question 11, find equilibrium solutions on the interval?\inline y\in [-\frac{\pi}{4},\frac{5\pi}{4}]
  • Section 1.4: 2, 3, 6
  • Section 1.5: 6, 8, 10, 13, 16, 19, 21. The solution for question 21 is in the textbook. Please click on the word “Hint” after question 21 in the textbook to see the solution.
  • Section 1.6: No homework assignment.
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
  • Section 5.1: 2, 3, 4, 8. For number 8, find the Jacobian matrix and classify the stability of the given equilibrium solution. Assume that the constants α, β, and γ are all positive.
Chapter 6
  • Section 6.1: 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 14, and 15.
  • Section 6.2: 1, 4, 6. For questions 1 and 6, factor the denominator before using a partial fraction decomposition.
  • Section 6.3: 2, 3, 5,?6. Question 6 has a mistake and cannot be solved as written. Question 6 includes the delta function?\inline \delta(t+4)?, which is not valid because it has a negative?a?= -4. So please change the?\inline \delta(t+4)?? to?\inline \delta(t-4)? in question 6.
  • Section 6.4: No homework assignment.
